#2883 "Dumoine Langmuir Cloud Streets"

#2883 "Dumoine Langmuir Cloud Streets"
Oils on stretched canvas 8 X 10 (inches).

I was chasing the shadows of the Dumoine forest and moved my easel back to the canoe beach beside the large white pine. The sun was firmly in the western sky and the large tree cast a cool and pleasant shadow for me.

The southeasterly winds in the lowest levels of the atmosphere had generated parallel Langmuir streets of stratocumulus. The clouds were backlit by the afternoon sun. The winds were consistent with the ridge of high pressure passing to the east of John's Cabin. The parade of weather systems never ends.

The valley of the Dumoine River trailed away to the south and the hills became progressively more muted in colour.

This is number twenty of thirty-five paintings I completed en plein air at CPAWS DRAW 2024. It was a wonderful experience with a terrific group of people. https://cpaws-ov-vo.org/draw-retreat-artists/ A portion of sales from this endeavour will go to support CPAW and keep the 'wild' in the wilderness.

#2882 "Dumoine Shore Twisted Roots"

#2882 "Dumoine Shore Twisted Roots"
Oils on stretched canvas 8 X 10 (inches).

from very near N46.466339 W77.768197.

It was important to stay hydrated and out of the strong August sun. After painting #2881 "Pincushion Island on the Dumoine River", I moved my easel so that I could see the exposed roots of an old cedar tree at the water's edge. The sun was moving into the afternoon sky.

The strong current of the Dumoine was always trying to remove the soil from the shoreline and constantly competing with the roots of the cedars to keep that earth in place. In this section of exposed shoreline, the river was apparently winning. Trippers were probably contributing to the soil loss as canoes were obviously beached there - including my own on occasion when I did not employ the other downstream sandy beach by the large white pine.

It was going to be a hot summer day. I decided to remain in the shade of the Dumoine forest by moving my easel to the fire pit area of the campsite.

This is the view across Pincushion Island on the Dumoine River toward John's Cabin on the distant shore. The water was calm and inviting.
