#2156 "White Cedar Siblings"

The three white cedars were all connected by roots. Spring flood waters from the raging Dumoine would have washed all of the soil away exposing what were underground linkages between these trees. I would expect that the soil would occasionally build up again from forest debris and vegetation but the highest of the Dumoine floods would eventually wash it away as well. This painting is paired with #2157 "Dumoine Rocky Roots". Both paintings were completed in heavily shaded areas on the west bank of the Dumoine River.

I needed to paint in the shade as the August sun and the heat were oppressive. Sunscreen was not enough. This location beside the Ledges Pool was also very convenient for frequent swims as well.

These smooth panels can be fun. One must mix the proper colour and tone, lay it on and leave it alone. The results can be powerful. Any further brush work turns everything into mud.
